It is possible to develop great analytical skills and explore real events, circumstances, and attitudes just by watching movies in a critical way, and doing some research because in movies you get more of the setting then you usually would in books and it gives the watcher a better view of the matter which allows the viewer to really understand what the actor is going through and lets you sympathize with him.
Movies are beneficial to learning because they give you a better idea of the setting. Personally I have gotten bored and frustrated with reading history and literature books, because I do not understand the setting of the book, which causes me to lose focus of analyzing the book. Without understanding the setting it is really hard to understand the book, for example in “Glory” if I would have read the book, it would have been hard for me to really capture and appreciate the significance of the camp fire before they took on their last battle. This scene shows how dedicated they are to fighting and how there so willing to give their lives for something they believe in, as well as how they have grown closer to each other, they aren’t just friends they have become family. In a book I would not have been able to capture the significance of this but in a movie you get a first hand look of the setting around them and the actors expressions.
Another reason movies are beneficial to learning is because it gives the viewer a better view on what is happening, for example in 12 Years a Slave if I read the book I would not have gotten the significance and realness of slavery. I saw the reality of being a slave, the decisions Solomon had to make, like whether to run away or not, who he could trust, etc. but a in a book you do not really get the intense mood as you do in the movie. A Rolling Stone critic, Peter Traverse describes 12 Years a Slave as, “It hurts to watch it. You won’t be able to tuck this powder keg in the corner of your mind and forget it. What we have here is a blistering, brilliant, straight up classic.” Peter goes on to say, “ This prickly renegade restores your faith in the harsh power of movies. You don’t just watch 12 Years a Slave you bleed with it, share its immediacy and feel the wounds that may be beyond healing.” With a watching 12 Years of slave, I felt like I was on the journey with Solomon and was really able to sympathize with him.
It is possible to develop great analytical skills and explore real events, circumstances, and attitudes just by watching movies in a critical way, and doing some research because it allows the viewer to more easily capture the setting of the movie and enjoy the actual movie rather then getting frustrated trying to figure out the setting and not appreciating the actual story which can happen when reading. Another reason it is possible to learn just by watching movies is because you get a better view point and idea of the trial and triumph the main actor is going through which allows you, in this case, to really sympathize with Solomon.
